I spent yesterday in Dorchester County, mostly at Blackwater NWR,
which I found pleasantly deserted (of human visitors). In spite of the
overcast, cool, and quiet conditions, I managed to tally 45 species.
The highlights included a group of AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS.
From the wildlife drive, I spotted 5 of them sleeping on a bit of
exposed mudflat out in the Blackwater River. After a few minutes
they were joined by 5 more, which came in for a landing and got
mixed up briefly with an adult BALD EAGLE that was just taking off.
I also saw 4 GLOSSY IBIS (on the far side of the first pool on the
drive), a SNOWY EGRET, a SUMMER TANAGER (on the Key
Wallace Trail), and a hen WILD TURKEY (in a plowed field on
Bestpitch Ferry Road).
