I just returned from visiting my Dad in Pittsburgh. He has a small postage
stamp back yard in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, but he has still managed to
observe some bird (and rabbit) behavior.
1. He watched a Common Grackle chase a House Sparrow into a large
azalea bush. He saw the Grackle drag it out and then proceed to eat the
sparrow.
2. He put a bird feeder inside one of those stacking square crates that
are popular for storing stuff and with college kids. He did this to keep
the larger birds (Pigeons and Grackles) out of the seed. Naturally, a
squirrel managed to find the larger opening where the hand-holds are. While
the squirrel was in there one day chowing down, a Red Tailed Hawk landed on
top of the feeder. He said the squirrel made some godawful noises. The
hawk would bend over and look at it in the crate but could not get at the
squirrel. After a while, the hawk lost interest and flew away.
3. He has a couple of rabbits that work their way thru the yard and
probably camp out in the privet and azaleas. Dad has watched several times
as the rabbit actually runs at and chases away crows and grackles that land
in the yard.
4. He regularly throws bread out for the birds (yes, I know that it is
not that good for them, but he has probably been doing it for 80 years).
Among the House Sparrows and others that eat, he has Robins that also eat
the bread.
