My wife, kid and I had a nice mid-day romp around Lake Elkton in Columbia
this afternoon. I needed Yellow-crowned Night-Heron for the county (ok,
state...ok REALLY- I've never seen one), so we piled into the Truckster and
forged on through Columbian lunch traffic.

I thought we were gonna get skunked- about 80 kids were having light saber
battles with canoe paddles along the trail entrance. About a quarter of a
mile around the right (counter-clockwise) side of the trail I hear a couple
of crows mobbing, and caught a glimpse of a Cooper's Hawk with a fresh kill
in it's talons. Tick...

Through the clouds of Catbirds, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Robins, Barn
Swallows and HOSP's, we made it to the back 40, where we successfully found
the entranced Yellow-crowned Night-Heron. It posed for a few pictures while
stalking it's lunch, and trotted off after a productive face-plant into the
lilies. Tick...

Other guests included, Cedar Waxwing, Am. Goldfinches, a Ring-billed Gull,
and several Wood Ducks.

Got a couple of pictures of the Cooper's and the YC Heron at

Happy birding!
