Hello,
I hope that you are all doing well. I went out to the Patuxent North Tract today (8am-3pm) to see what I could find. It was a great day with a list of 58 species including 7 of which were "heard only" and 12 WARBLERS! (WEAR BUG SPRAY B/C I HAVE GOTTEN 1+ TICKS EVERY TIME I HAVE BEEN TO THE PARK (3x)!) I birded Wild Turkey Way to Whip-poor-will Way to Pine Warbler Way and back by foot, and the Wildlife loop by car. Highlights include (the full list is at the end):
- Blue Grosbeak 2
- SUMMER TANAGER (a life bird, and GREAT looks at eye level!)
- Scarlet Tanager 3
- Black Vulture 2
- Chat, Yellow-breasted 1 (under the power lines)
- Ovenbird 6
- Parula, Northern 3
- Redstart, American 1
- Warbler, Black-and-white	3
- Warbler, Hooded 5
- WARBLER, KENTUCKY 1 (I heard it here last week but finally saw it this week along Whip-poor-will Way. Only the 2nd one I have ever seen.)
- Warbler, Pine 1
- Warbler, Prairie 4
- Warbler, Worm-eating 3 (including a juvenile)
- Yellowthroat, Common 4
**** WARBLER, MAGNOLIA **** 1 (heard only. Same spot as last week: on Wild Turkey Way 100 feet just before the junction with Kingisher Road when walking from the Contact Station. It sang very clearly and continuously but a 2hr search turned up no sighting. I did hear Hooded Warblers singing, though, so I had a comparison between the two. The Magnolia sounded like: "wee, to-wee, to-wee-ee-oo" (as opposed to the the slower, lower Hooded's "wee-to wee-to wee-ee-oo"). I heard it last week but did not put a name on the bird until I listened to the tapes after I got home. It was still there today. I know that it is not common here so please keep a look out for it and let me know if you see/hear it.)

I would like to go back next weekend but would like company. Would anyone like to join me for an 8am adventure either Saturday/Sunday. Please e-mail me off the list at

Please keep an eye out for the Magnolia Warbler. I tried to find it today, but could not.

(Also, at Foggy Bottom, Rock Creek SP, I saw a Black-crowned Night Heron on Friday)

Thanks. Bye.
