More on the display I witnessed. Both were adult males as far as I could
tell and it would be rather early to have a juvenile out and about as I saw
this on April 23rd. The dance went around and around the tree turnk and up and
down, the two birds always on opposite sides of the trunk. From time to time
one would strike at the other ... no feeding this. Occasionally a
widespread wing display. The "agressor" role seemed to change from time to time but
both birds were very careful to keep out of reach of the stabbing motions of
the other's bill, jerking up and then down -- then left then right. The only
sound was when one of them would peck at the tree just in front which action
the other bird promptly mimicked. Just single pecks from time to time tossed
into the ballet.
