While driving to BWI on Monday evening at around 8:00 pm, I noticed a group
of approximately 40 birds flying in front of me as I approached at 68 mph.
I was on Rt. 97 and had just passed the exit for Rt.32. The birds were
loosely arranged but were trying to form into the classic V formation.
Driving along at 68 mph, I could not make any detailed observations (pulling
over was not an option ) and I was really puzzled trying to figure out what
they were. Too small for Canada Geese ... too white for ducks ... too
small for Great Blues or Great Egrets. It finally struck me that they were
Snowy Egrets flying in formation ... unless they were Cattle Egrets, but
seeing 40 of them is probably less likely than seeing 40 Snowy's.
