Actually, Red-necked Stint is much rarer in the Western palearctic than on the east coast of North America (not that it isn't rare here, esp. in recent years), for example there have been very few British records (8 I believe) and it is a "mega" rarity there. The general thought is that our summer birds have come across the continent from west to east, since they breed in NE Siberia and (maybe) NW Alaska and are long-distance migrants to SE Asia, Australia & NZ.
