Fred, et. al.-
I have been looking for the whistling ducks too, but have not found them. I
saw you though! I confirm the abundance of marsh wrens - it was a good
year for them here. A couple notable finds were a lone Semi-p. Sandpiper and
an interesting Acadian Flycatcher. Shorebirds are tough at Jug Bay in Fall,
due to the small amount of mudflat (which is only here at low tide), and if you
are on the river - the lack of visibility from all the marsh vegetation. Spring is
much better here. The Acadian was neat: with my eyes only, I saw a small
bird flying that had some dull yellow and green, with apparent big red/orange
flashes. I was confused, to say the least. Fortunately it landed, and then I
got my bins on it. Turns out it had a large butterfly, an anglewing (I couldn't
tell if it was a comma or question mark). The butterfly was flapping and
showing much orange. The bird was daunted a bit, but persevered, and
eventually got it just right and then swallowed it whole. No pecking or
crushing to subdue the meal first before swallowing; the bird just simply
gulped it down. Wish I had a video of it!
Cheers-
