Yesterday afternoon (Sunday, August 12) I found a SEDGE WREN
along Cedar Creek Road in southern Dorchester County. It was in
the vicinity of a tall dead snag that stands by itself about 75 yards
from the edge of the road, on the north side. In the same area were
Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed and Seaside Sparrows. Also, an EASTERN
MEADOWLARK flushed from an area of short grass near the edge
of the woods.
On the way down, a pair of adult Bald Eagles flew up from a dead
opossum on Maple Dam Road. From the end of Cedar Creek Road,
I saw another low-flying adult eagle being dive-bombed by an Osprey.
I had time for only a quick trip through Blackwater NWR. There were
a good number of shorebirds and waders. I saw several dozen Least
and Semipalmated Sandpipers, a few Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs,
Semipalmated Plovers (at least 2), several Killdeer, an immature
Little Blue Heron, 2 or 3 Snowy Egrets, and 4 Osprey.
