I stopped for lunch at the Tidewater in Havre de Grace today, because
it was such a gorgeous afternoon and it gave me the chance to watch
boats and admire the two seaplanes docked next door. A Blue Heron
lounged around the seaplane pier until a Coast Guard boat came too close,
but what really caught my eye was a flock of at least 150 immature
Purple Martins
swirling overhead. At various times they swooped right over the umbrellas
on the deck; at others, they circled in a thermal, going from rooftop
height to
so high I couldn't see them anymore, and then a few minutes later they'd
come back, calling and diving towards the water's surface. What a pleasant
way to spend a waterfront hour!
