Eleven birders visited Black Walnut Point on Aug 19, taking advantage of
the cooler day despite some very light showers that lingered.
Top bird for the day was a Black Tern - viewed from Poplar Island, and
at times flying reasonably close to the observers. Other terns viewed
included Royal, Caspian, Forster's and Common.
The warbler search yielded a couple of Yellows, several hearings of
Common Yellowthroat, and a view of a fairly late active Pine Warbler nest.
The parent bird was seen going into the nest several times, and appeared
also to be feeding young in the nest.
Numerous Osprey (20 +) were present, mostly loafing on the poles of the
endless strings of pound nets. At one point three Bald Eagles were playing
together in the sky. Bobolinks made one fly-by pass, and Barn Swallows,
Tree Swallows and Purple Martins were taking advantage of the winds.
Several Brown-headed Nuthatches were heard more than seen.
