Jim, Wallace, & I were the only birders in evidence on a
dull, overcast morning at the Rock Creek Park Maintenance
Yard. The birding was slow at first but it picked up around
8:15 am. The highlight was an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER
hawking for insects from the bare snags at the forest edge
on the south side of the yard. Other highlights included
YELLOW-THROATED VIREO (1 singing), RED-EYED VIREO (2),
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER (1 male), AMERICAN REDSTART (1
female), BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER (1 female), CANADA WARBLER
(1), BALTIMORE ORIOLE (1 bright male), and a flyover COMMON
NIGHTHAWK. There seemed to be a lot of pewees and Downys
about, plus a couple HOUSE WRENS. I may have glimpsed a
Northern Parula.
