Yesterday evening Danny Poet called me with a report of a Tuesday
evening sighting of a Buff-breasted Sandpiper at the Central Sod Farm in
Queen Anne's County. The bird was across the road from the brick house, and
slightly to the south, near the closest corner of the field where the grass
is low and dry and brown. This makes for very easy viewing.
I checked that site around 9:30 this morning, and the bird was still
there, exactly where Danny had seen it. Several times it came so close to
John Brown Road that it was nearly under the piece of irrigation equipment
that is parked beside the road. Great views at that location were available
without use of a scope, and by staying in my truck the bird remained
perfectly comfortable as it foraged vigorously in that corner.
Other birds scattered around in the field included at least six Horned
Larks and nine Killdeer. The Buffie was still there when I left - around
9:50.
