Hi all,
I had business in Montgomery County today, and managed to squeeze in some
birding at mid-day and at mid-afternoon between jobs. Although very hot and
humid, I spent about an hour (11:30-12:30 at Blue Mash, scanning both ponds for
shorebirds and not much else. At the big pond I saw 4 Pectoral Sandpipers,
3-4 Semipalmated Plovers (a good # for anywhere in Montgomery County besides
the turf farms), about 4-5 Least Sands, a yellowlegs I suspect was Lesser but
which disappeared behind the willows in front shortly after I first saw it,
and small numbers of Killdeer.

At the small pond there were only Spotted Sandpiper and Green Herons, as
well as a Great Blue at each pond.

From about 2:15-3:00 I was at Layhill Park. I spent the whole time at the
boy scout bridge, watching a variety of birds using the small creek to cool off.
Here I saw Scarlet Tanager, Indigo Bunting, lots of catbirds, cardinals and
titmice, as well as single first fall female Canada Warbler and Cerulean
Warbler. This bird was tricky as it didn't stay still for long, and flitted
about the trees right at the bridge, picking insects off leaves . It was first
in the company of the Canada Warbler, but then they separated. First Cerulean I
have seen outside of the Potomac area in quite some time, and a first for me
at Layhill Park. Lots of goldfinches there too, and Blue Jays, Red-eyed
Vireo, and a Red-tailed Hawk flyover.

Boy it was muggy!!

Have a great weekend, stay cool.
