Hi All,

On the way home from a family swimming expedition to the public pool in
Millington we stopped to take a look at Great Oak Pond. In spite of
having to do the two-step to keep the stable flies off my ankles I had
some nice birds. There were two male AMERICAN AVOCETS on the far shore,
a single juvenile WESTERN SANDPIPER, 18 Least Sandpipers, six
Semipalmated Sandpipers, four Greater Yellowlegs, and eight Lesser
Yellowlegs. Waterfowl included an eclipse drake CANVASBACK who has been
in residence all summer tipping-up with the local Mallards, and two
newly-arrived migrants -- three Green-winged Teal, and five Northern
Shovelers.

Also of interest was a single highly vocal RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH in the
little stand of trees next to the Millington Pool. That big cone crop up
north last fall and winter has no sequel and now we're getting the
refugees. Could be a decent finch year as well.

Good birding,

Walter Ellison
