Marshall Iliff sent me an email pointing out that
Maryland has VAULTED to the #4 spot for checklist
submissions, just after Wisconsin for August! Check
out the sidebar at www.ebird.org. This means more MD
checklists than TX checklists. That's astounding!

If you haven't done so already, and I know there are
quite a few MDOsprey readers who are contributors, you
can submit your daily checklists for various hotspots
throughout MD and if there isn't one that includes
your favorite haunt, you can create one. Soon, there
will be an upload tool that will allow you to format
data in Excel and import multiple checklists,
simultaneously, into eBird.

eBird is a database that helps keep track of bird
abundances and distribution but you can also use it to
keep your lifelists, assuming that you have the
correct date, location and quantity of birds seen, if
you are only submitting casual observations. People
like Bob Ringler, Harry Armistead and Gene Scarpulla,
to name a few, who keep detailed records of quantity
and and species, can contribute significantly to the
distribution data. Bob already is!

Anyway, I think that eBird is a fantastic tool and the
more people that use it, the better it will become.
