All,
For those of you interested in keeping up on the latest additions to the
North American list, a major shocker was found two days ago on the
Pribilofs--Brown Hawk Owl (Ninox scutulata)! Clements (2007) splits
this species into two--Ninox scutulata for the southern populations and
Ninox japonica (Northern Boobook) for the northern populations from
which this pertain almost certainly came. You can see photos and live
the experience vicariously through reading the story of its discovery at
www.ebird.org.
The other newest ABA-Area bird, Townsend's (Newell's) Shearwater
(Puffinus auricularis newelli) also has photos and a story at
www.ebird.org.
And if that isn't enough, for additional rare bird news you can read
about what is shaping up to be a great fall at Gambell, St. Lawrence
Island, AK, since Paul Lehman's regular posts are appearing on eBird as
well. Highlight's so far have been North America's second Willow
Warbler, a Brown Shrike, Pechora Pipit, Dusky Warbler, and much more.
Best,
Marshall Iliff
PS -- While you're there, enter an eBird checklist from your morning or
lunch-break birding!
