Towards the end of an ANS midweek field trip I led to Hughes Hollow,
Montgomery County, this morning (9/6) our group visited the polo
fields along Hughes Rd., about 1/2 mile north of River Rd.
A basic plumaged American Golden-plover was feeding on the short
grass along with the usual flock of Killdeer at around 11 a.m.
The Say's Phoebe discovered last Sunday was not to be seen in the
area and may have "flown the coop."
Hughes Hollow was quite active this morning, although a majority of
the flitting passerines were Goldfinches. We also saw a beautiful,
perched immature Cooper's Hawk, quite a few Indigo Buntings and
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, and some Cedar Waxwings. Unusual for
Hughes were three Redstarts and a Chestnut-sided Warbler. The amount
of wet mud attractive to shorebirds has shrunk a lot there, and we
were able to find just four Least Sandpiper and a Killdeer.
Good Birding.
