Yesterday at about 5:35 pm I began noticing nighthawks here at Jug Bay, and
it was the most I've ever seen. I guess they were being pushed by a cold
front, or taking advantage of it? Due to partial view obstruction from trees, I
cannot say with certainty that they were everywhere in the sky, but they
were everywhere that I could see! I walked around the house, and it didn't
matter where you stood or looked, they were some in view. The most I
counted in view at one time was 59, but there was always 5-10 in view. Most
of them were heading generally in a south direction, but many seemed to
recycle back to here and spend time hawking over the fields in front of us or
over the marsh at Jug Bay. They continued passing for about 40-45 minutes,
and I would guess there were well over 100. There may have been several
humdred, it's really only a guess. The show was over by 6:20.
At a shallow pond off Croom Station Road, I also noticed a bunch of egrets so
I stopped to have a look. I found only Great Egrets and Great Blue Herons,
but there were 19 and 8 of each, respectively (about 6:40pm).
