MD Osprey:
As most people know, Maryland is hosting two "reintroduced" Trumpeter
Swans that were banded in Ontario, Canada after these siblings were
hatched in 2005.
Swan #960 was first sighting at Benedict in Charles County in May
2005 but then in June moved to Oxbow Lake in Laurel, Anne Arundel
County where it has been resident ever since.
Swan #962 was also first observed in May 2005 but at Schoolhouse
Pond, Upper Marlboro, Prince George's County. Despite some absences,
the bird is still present at this location. Fred Shaffer reported
that it was gone from this pond between 4/30/207 and 6/7/2007. I just
found out that this bird had spent a least a week at Patuxent Refuge,
North Tract, in the spring. If anyone has any information, such as
dates, on this or any other excursions, please let me know.
My m.o. has been to capture all reports of either of these birds on
MD Osprey, so that when (?) the birds departed, we would know the
last sighting dates. Since these bird don't show much inclination to
leave, I think I'm going to change my process and stop capturing
every sighting report. Please continue to report these birds on any
visits to these locations, but if anyone notices anything out of the
"normal pattern" for these birds (like finding them in another
location, missing them on a visit, etc.), please be sure to post that
information and I'll capture it.
Special thanks to Marcy Stutzman who has been tracking #960 at Oxbow
Lake and Fred Shaffer who reports on #962 at Schoolhouse Pond.
(So, I wonder what happened to Swan #961?)
Thanks!
Phil
