We had a fine day at Turkey Point today, with 51 Sharp-shinned Hawks
and 136 Broad-winged Hawks
helping to bring our total to 205 migrant raptors for the day, from 7
a.m. to 2 p.m. A single late
Merlin was our only falcon; oddly missing are the masses of Blue Jays
we usually see in mid-September.
There were lots of warblers and other migrants, including Chimney
Swifts, Cormorants, and Monarch
Butterflies. Flight was high for most of these creatures--the
Broadwings were almost impossible
to see with the naked eye. They didn't kettle over the meadow, but
streamed by as they cruised to
the next thermal. More than 100 went by in three streams from
10:20-10:40. Lovely!
Thank you to observers Monroe Harden, Leslie Fisher, and Sean
McCandless who joined me today.
