Hey everyone, I surveyed the Laurel area for the MOS PG
county fall count yesterday (9/16/07). What follows are my
species totals for the day, which included some owling
pre-dawn and post-dusk (without luck). Locations included
my feeders at home, the Rocky Gorge Reservoir/Supplee Park
(unfortunately access to the boat ramp was closed), and
various "hot spots" around Laurel.
I got 60 species for the day, with the most unusual
including: an adult YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON (upstream
from the lake near the shopping centers on Route 1), 8
BROAD-WINGED HAWKS flying over my yard (yard bird!), a
LAUGHING GULL lounging with the other gulls on a department
store roof near the Laurel lake, a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO in
the Laurel riverfront park, 2 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES and 2
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS (male & female) at Supplee Park, and
an AMERICAN PIPIT on Muirkirk Rd near MD-197 (the bird had a
noticeable yellowish wash under the tail that's not
discussed in my field guides -- is this a known variation?).
Some notable misses for the day: shorebirds (pretty tough in
my area), Fish Crow (had 3 crow "sp."), thrushes other than
bluebird and robin, Song Sparrow, and grackles and
blackbirds. For a while I thought I was going to miss HAIRY
WOODPECKER, but our regular male finally showed up at our
feeders just before sunset!
