I had not seen the whimbrel for several days and so I assumed it had moved on. But there it was early this morning on the beach north of Mayo Beach . I called Bobbi Reichwein, who had missed seeing it before. She came within a half hour and we watched the bird feed for about 20 minutes at quite close range. We were careful not to get too close but this individual is more tame than any whimbrel I have ever seen. It was obviously aware of our presence but continued to feed, finding some sort of crustacean, that looked like small crab, among the rocks of a jetty. While were watching, it suddenly crouched low, alerting us to a peregrine that passed just overhead.
