Folks

As Rick mentioned, please keep your hummingbird feeders clean and full. You
are likely to get some migrants traveling through, so I also increase the
sugar ratio to 3 water to 1 sugar.

I will leave my feeders out until at least December 31 in case Rufous
migrants show up. They are annual occurrence in our region, and normally
start showing up in late October. There are record as early as July, but
normally November is the peak time for Rufous to arrive in the east. Some
will stay until the first of the year.

Spread the word, any hummingbird after October 15 in our region is worth
taking a closer look at. If you have a bird coming to a feeder after that
date, and have little experience with western hummingbirds, contact someone
with good hummingbird skills. Also take pictures. Ruby-throated can
linger into November, but November is the month when the first Calliope and
Anna's arrived in our region as. The most common hummingbird in our
region in November is Rufous. If you get a suspect western hummingbird,
contact me please. Migrants, regardless of the species, don't necessarily
stay around long, so put a feeder near a window you look out regularly.
This way you will know if you have a late bird or migrant sooner then later.
Once it starts getting real cold (20 F), don't fill your feeders. Leave
about feeder about 1/3 empty so as not to freeze and break. Water expands
at freezing.

I had what I consider a migrant in the yard today. Feed mostly on the
butterfly bush instead of the feeder. My nesting birds vacated about a week
ago, but a few migrants have visited, so keep those feeders full and leave
them out.

Enjoy your birds.

George
