Marty Cribb led a field trip this morning for SMAS to
Pt. Lookout State Park. One of the first birds seen by
the group was the Whimbrel that me had found last
Thursday. It was first seen near the smokehouse near
the "Y" at the loop at the point. It walked casually
along the grass picking crickets. At one point we
watched it standing on the rip-rap on the Bay side as
it regurgitated gravel and undigested items before
moving on back toward the lighthouse.

We checked the rump which it reluctantly showed was
barred from the tip of the tail up onto the mantle.
Just a local!

The temps and humidity were high and the wind from the
southwest. Not a really good day for migrants. Still
we managed a decent assortment of raptors with 4
Kestrels, a Merlin, 5 Osprey, 2 Bald Eagles, a
Sharp-shinned Hawk and one Red-tailed Hawk. At one
point, the Merlin dive-bombed a Kestrel that had
landed in a pine along the Periwinkle Trail behind the
museum.
