Working on the MD and DC historical database here ...

The summary of the 1983 May Count by Jim Stasz, published in Maryland
Birdlife 39(2):40, indicates that a Spotted Towhee was reported in
Washington County on the May Count on 07 May 1983. This would be the
earliest date in Maryland for this western taxon (this was before the
Rufous Towhee split into Eastern and Spotted.) The "traditional"
sources for historical details and documentation do not have any
further information on this sighting.

If any one out there recalls anything about this observation, such as
the observer, the location, or if any notes were taken ... please let me know.

Thanks!

Phil
