Hi all,
The Montgomery County Sitting Ducks held our 6th annual BIG SIT! today at
Black Hill Regional Park in amazingly beautiful weather. We had less than
outstanding numbers of species however, ending after 9 hours with 45 species,
which beat our previous "low" by only 2 species. Given the stunning weather I
cannot account for this, except to say that the early AM had little or no
winds, followed by south winds from mid-morning to early afternoon, changing to
northwest winds from mid-late afternoon.
However, we did have good numbers of raptors, including 2 Bald Eagles, many
Cooper's and Sharp-shinned, Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks. We did not
have Osprey or kestrel, birds we have had in other years.
We also had 4 species new to our count, including Green-winged Teal,
Blue-winged Teal, Red-headed Woodpecker and Rusty Blackbirds.
Big misses included Mourning Dove, House Finch, YB Sapsucker, and Chimney
Swift.
We'll get 'em next year! As for this year, as they say, a good time was had
by all!
