Hi everyone,

Just wanted to announce the upcoming meeting of the
Prince George's Audubon Society and the Patuxent
chapter of the MOS. It will take place tomorrow night
(Tuesday, 11/13) at 7:30 at the College Park Airport
Annex. Refreshments will be served and the program
is, as always, free and open to the public. See our
website for more information, directions to the
meeting, and upcoming field trips.

Hope to see you there!

>>The one bet on which a veteran birder could expect
to win money is that, given enough time, sooner or
later every birder comes to know the defeat and
triumph involved in adjusting a life list to a recent
lump or split. Charged opinions often fly as to why
these changes occur, but behind it all is an
interesting mix of history, procedure, and biology
that says less about mysticism or arbitrariness and
more about the progress of science and the way we
interpret biological diversity. Using some of North
America’s best known examples, Patuxent Wildlife
Research Center biologist Dave Ziolkowski explores the
basics of how we’ve come to think about species, who
governs the official species recognition process, and
how modern molecular techniques are helping to shape
the way we understand our continent’s birdlife.

David has done original work on classification in the
Caribbean, where the island geography isolates
populations and permits a sharper delineation of
evolutionary sequences. He is currently a biologist
with the Breeding Bird Survey at PWRC.<<
