The impoundments are still just puddles, but there were plenty of birds at
Hughes Hollow today. All seven local woodpeckers (Red-headed, Red-bellied,
Pileated, Hairy, Downy, Flicker and YB Sapsucker) were seen. Sparrows were
numerous and varied (Fox, Swamp, Song, White-throated, imm. White-crowned plus
adult male Towhee). Also saw Winter Wren, both kinglets, Red-breasted Nuthatch,
Brown Creeper, Merlin, and YR Warbler. Another highlight was watching
scores of Rusty Blackbirds alternatively bathing in one of the "impuddlements" and
feeding in the neighboring muck.
