Today I decided to bird at Rumbly Point. While driving I noticed a bird that
was hunting at the end of the road. I first thought it was a Rough Legged
Hawk or a Harrier. As we got closer it was clear that it was not a hawk but an
owl. I grabbed my binoculars to see what kind of owl it was. Then it started
to fly right toured us staying writhen 20 ft of our car. It was a Short eared
Owl, my first one in the wild. I watched as it turned around to chase a
Northern Harrier. I hope that a sign that the owl will decide to nest here but
there are two pairs of Northern Harriers in the area to give it lots of
trouble.
Other birds I saw are listed below
5 Snipe
4 Northern Harriers
6 Black Ducks
2 Great Blue Herons
1 Great Egret
2 Slate Colored Juncos
25 Yellow Rumped Warblers
1 Peregrine Falcon
1 Coopers Hawk
4 Seaside Sparrows
12 Eastern Meadowlarks ( flushed out by Short eared Owl )
1 Hermit Thrush
25 Red winged Blackbirds
5 Brown headed Nuthatches
2 Brown Creepers
12 Red breasted Nuthatches
