Lots of new bird business in Rose Haven lately...

Yesterday had several Pine Siskins at my feeders as well as a Red-Breasted and White Breasted Nutchatch and some chickadees. The Siskins don't appear to get along with the others who evidently do not appreciate the siskins getting INSIDE the feeder. The RB Nuthatch (a recent addition to the area) was particularly put out and vocal about it and the Chickadees and the WB Nuthatch left in apparent disgust to go to the other feeder that was siskin-less...they were quite vocal as well. There was a LOT of fussing going on in my plum tree yesterday. I had a lot of fun watching the goings on.

Coolest news is that a group of several Great Horned Owls have taken up residence in my neighbourhood right around my house. Do they travel together or something, I thought they were rather solitary? Anyway, they have been having quite long, complicated conversations at night about 10pm. There are at least 3. One scared the crap out of me the other night -- I could hear a couple of owls calling and had stepped out into the yard to try and locate where they were because they were quite close, one was very, very close, quite low down on the other side of my car and another was, unbeknownst to me, right over my head in the Big Oak in my yard, barely 5 feet over my head, when it answered the first one by the car I about had a stoke. Further evidence can be found in the yard in the mornings... mostly just bits of fur, lots of bits of fur....

White Throated Sparrows have arrived and I have had a few Juncoes and a couple of days ago a Brown Creeper was creeping and peeping up the big oak in my yard - that was fun.

And here's a weirdism - I didn't say anything at the time but well, a couple of weeks ago or so there were 3 Ravens in my tree and the tree across the street. I have absolutely no doubt they were Ravens, I lived in Alaska for 15 years and have seen many, many Ravens. They were goofing around annoying the crows and jays and making a ruckus in the oaks, eating acorns I believe - that one tree must be on the bird version of zagats anyway- they did vocalise, they were making that goofy guur-ok cry they make. If you've ever heard it you can't forget it and there really is no mistaking that for anything else. If it weren't for the guur-oking I might have talked myself into thinking them very large crows. They were only there for a while that day. The odd thing is that last year about the same time I thought I saw 3 ravens on the edge of Sansbury road but was on my way to work and couldn't stop. At the time I didn't know we don't have ravens in this part of Maryland - do we?
I wondered if they must be on their way to wherever they go and this is one of their rest stops, like Stuckeys?
