Sorry for the late posting, but I just today discovered an interesting 
article on flocking in the October issue of Physics Today (the monthly 
news magazine for physicists).  You don't need to understand any physics 
to read it.  Go to http://www.physicstoday.org/ , click on "Past Issues" 
in the middle about 5 or 6 inches from the top, then on October, and 
finally on the miniature Physics Today cover near the top (which shows 
some photos of dramatic flocks).
