Subject: 12-02-07 p.m. birding in Dorchester Co.

After brunch yesterday four Talbot birders went in search of the
Rough-legged Hawk and Short-eared Owl. We found both. One Rough-legged
Hawk was seen on Cedar Creek Rd. He seemed to come from the many snags at
the edge of marsh and flew across and then directly away from us towards the
water. We stopped along Shorter's Wharf rd. on our way back about 4:20 and
a total of five Short-eared Owls were seen. A not ready to retire for the
night N. Harrier had a slight disagreement with one owl and did some aerial
posturing. Soon all were back to coursing over the marsh. Also seen were
a couple dozen each of Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, also Dunlin,
2-Hooded Mergs., and one Wilson's (Common) Snipe. A truly impressive 3,500
-4,500 Tree Swallows were seen swirling over a small patch of marsh a little
before Cedar Creek Rd. We stopped and observed them for about 5 minutes
before they slowly swirled out of sight. Light was poor and it had just
started to sprinkle so we could not pull another species out of the mass.
Seems late for such a large flock to still be around even though some are
seen in winter.
