Leaving work today out of Edgewood in Harford County, a small flock of birds
got up off the roadside from where the snow met the wet, puddle-covered
blacktop. Robins and blackbirds were the abundant type, but two birds that
caught my attention "flitted along" showing white outer retrices were cause
to stop. A quick elimination of junco and a pair of binos brought to view
two American Pipits. They walked to within 6 feet of my driver's side
window. When they flew, one literally almost flew into my open window.
I've got a new appreciation for those retrices when said bird had to bank
hard to avoid my equally-surprised face.
