Hi all,
Within the past hour my daughter arrived home from college for winter
break. We were in the kitchen talking about the Cooper's Hawk which has been
hanging out today and scaring all the feeder birds. I had seen it 3 times so far.
While we were talking I looked out in time to see all the goldfinches (about
2 dozen) scatter in fright. I said to Alli that it was probably the Cooper's
Hawk back again, when I spied a black and white bird land in the small
dogwood tree, and it wasn't a mocker. Since my binoculars were in my bag and still
in my shop, I grabbed another spare pair. By the time I got back, Alli said
it was in flight. It landed in the top of a neighbors tree at the edge of the
woods and cow pasture. I got my scope set up on it. A NORTHERN SHRIKE!!
What an amazing yard bird.
I grabbed my cell phone and only managed to call Dave Powell before it flew
off into the pasture, but I will keep everyone posted should it return. I
really hope it does, as Alli grabbed her camera but it flew before she could get
a shot.
