Hi Everyone,

Yesterday (Sunday, 12/16) was quite an exciting day. Zach Baer and I
joined Jim Stasz in covering his Chesapeake Beach and North Beach
territory for the Jug Bay CBC. We found a nice assortment of waterfowl,
including all three scoters, as well as some great passerines such as
MARSH WREN, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, PURPLE FINCH, and PINE SISKIN. I'll post
the full list of sightings that I noted, but Stasz certainly has others
from before and after our time there.

At noon, Zach and I decided that we'd spend an hour walking around Sligo
Creek in hopes of lucking into the WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL reported twice
by Noah Kahn. To our shock and delight, we found the bird just minutes
after starting our search, perched with about 50 HOUSE FINCHES in a large
Tuliptree. We first found them in the tree line north of Sligo Creek
Parkway and just east of Brunett Ave. John Hubbell arrived a few minutes
after the first sighting and we headed south after the flock. We re-found
the bird at about 1:15 near the wooden bridge south of the intersection of
Sligo Creek Parkway and Brunett Ave. Our looks were short but very
satisfying, the bird a beautiful bright red male with strong white
wingbars. During both sightings the bird was in the company of the large
House Finch flock and both times it was feeding in the crowns of
Tuliptrees (Yellow Poplar). We were later joined by Dave Powell, Rob
Hilton, Barry Cooper, and Dave Sperry (sp?), enjoying some nice
conversation, but unfortunately failing to re-find the bird. We also had
the pleasure of meeting Noah Kahn. Thanks for hosting such a great bird,
Noah! I was not expecting to get a life bird in Maryland yesterday!

Zach and I decided to end the day looking for waterfowl at Black Hills,
then met Tom Feild for celebratory beers. Nothing goes with a life bird
like a Dos Equis, except maybe two Dos Equis (Cuatro Equis).
