Now that winter is here a few Snow Geese appeared on Leeds Creek beyond
our pier. There were three of them here this morning, two adults and one
juvenile. These are not common here. Past sightings for the property were
of single birds in 2004, 1998, and 1996.
Other sightings today included:
Red-breasted Nuthatch
Canada Geese (around 4000 on the creek)
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Robin - 20+
Song Sparrow
White-throated Sparrow - 12+
Dark-eyed Junco - 40+
Fox Sparrow - 1
Purple Finch - (one brown one)
Yellow-rumped Warbler
and the normal numbers of Blue Jay, Cardinal, Bluebird, Chickadee,
Titmice and Goldfinch.
A few days ago one male Northern Shoveler joined the 40+ Mallards on the
creek. This morning I stopped briefly at Pickering Creek to see what was on
the water of their largest pond. Sure enough - quite a few ducks over there
including Northern Shoveler (12+); Black Duck (12+); Green-winged Teal and
Mallards amongst the large number of Canada Geese.
