Subject: Blackwater birding
Hello Everyone,
I decided to spend my last day of 2007 birding blackwater. I had several
sightings that I thought some of you might be interested in. I saw a total
of four Short-eared owls and one Rough-legged Hawk. The first three owls
were on Cedar Point Road. To get there take Shorter's Wharf Rd, and after
crossing the bridge and a short drive take a left to Andrews Rd , and then
after you pass a church that is at Willey's Neck Rd, this road has a sign,
take the first left to Cedar Point Rd, it is unmarked. From Shorter's
Wharf it is 8 miles to the end of Cedar Point Road. This is a short road-
1.9 mi. ( I hope this makes sense, if not and you are interested, give me a
call.) The fourth owl was on Shorter's Wharf Rd just after the bridge on
the way back to Cambridge. This owl was a female. I base this on the very
light face shown in Sibley. She was sitting on a post for a short time so i
was able to have a good look.
The Rough-legged Hawk was on Cedar Point Rd. Part of this road is lined
with Pines and Bayberry shrubs. Keep a close eye for these hawks as you
drive through. And after you are on open road check all the possible
roosting sites. The one I saw was a Light juvenile. This is based on the
distinctive pattern of dark wrists and belly ( from Sibley ).
There were Bald Eagles all over the place. I saw at least five pairs. And
did not count the individuals. There were a few adults, but unfortunately
did not see a Golden.
Lots of others but most were the usuals.
What a way to end the old year!!! Happy New Year to all.
