The Audubon Naturalist Society field trip to the
National Arboretum in northeast Washington, D. C.,
recorded at least 29 species today between 10 am and
about 12:30 pm. There were about 15 participants, and
we visited the Asian collections and walked along the
Anacostia River. Star birds were Bald Eagle and
Red-breasted Nuthatch, unfortunately not seen by all
participants. The sapsucker was fairly cooperative,
and the Cooper's Hawk perched a couple hundred feet
away for many minutes. Numbers are approximate and
conservative. The weather was sunny and calm, the
temperatures ranged from roughly 46 to about 52
degrees (8 to 11 C).
