Hello,
This Saturday, DC Audubon is holding the 10th Annual C&O Canal Midwinter
Bird Survey!
If you just couldn't get enough of the early winter Christmas Bird Counts,
come out for the mid-winter C&O Canal bird count.
We hope to get 100% coverage of the canal for our landmark 10th year, but we
still have a few gaps in coverage. Please let us know if you can cover any
of the following groups of miles:
1. Miles 10 & 11
2. Miles 30, 31, 32, 33
3. Mile 39
4. Miles 76, 77, 78, 79, 80
Groups 2 & 4 can be broken down into smaller chunks.
How does it work? On the morning of January 19, 2008, volunteers will walk
along their favorite 2-5 miles of the canal and count all the birds they see
and hear. Those who cannot park a car at each end of the sector will have
to double-back along the towpath. The count takes approximately around 100
volunteers to cover all 184.5 miles of the canal. We are so thankful for
those dedicated birders who volunteer every year-we couldn't do it without
them.
This year will mark a decade in monitoring wintering birds along the C&O
Canal. Long-term data demonstrates trends and changes in bird populations
of this important habitat. Join us on this fun event with a good purpose.
Beginners and experts welcome. Check http://www.dcaudubon.org/canal2008
