Our late friend, Paul DuMont, was enthusiastic about the "Traditions" pieces
that I write regularly for Birding. So, it was a real surprise to him that
the November/December 2006 issue pictured a group of birders lunching by the
'Trackdozer' on Attu in 1986. Paul was included in the photo, along with
comments on his field-identifiable plastic-covered large pack. (No, Mack, I
didn't say anything about his mega-thermos, nor did I mention his pocket-protector
packed with pencils and pens! Jerry, you're in that photo, too.)
Anyhow, Paul smiled from ear to ear over that photo. He was thrilled.
Curiously, I also mentioned Paul's valuable contributions to Gulf-Stream
Pelagics (the "Ake-DuMont" experiences) in a review of Scott Weidensaul's book
in the current (Jan/Feb '08) issue of Birding. That issue was probably in
the mail when Paul died.
I, among many others, will miss Paul. Ever-helpful to birders learning
afield, he was a generous soul.
