My wife, son and I went to visit some friends in Wheaton last night.
They live about a mile North of the Beltway, on the Western side of
Georgia Avenue.

They've had BARRED OWLS calling recently. They called again last
night, from an area just beyond their backyard. Crazy these suburban
/ city dwelling owls.

When we returned home to West Annapolis after that amazing football
game, my wife and son got ready for bed and I was in charge of walking
the dogs. Since we got home a bit late, the post-Super Bowl traffic
on Rt 50 was no more and it was rather quiet for my neighborhood. In
the distance I heard two GREAT HORNED OWLS calling back and forth.
One sounded like it was on or near the Eastern banks of Weems Creek
and the other sounded as if it was coming from the direction of the
Navy Football Stadium.

They were distant calls to say the least, but it made the dog walk
that much more enjoyable.

Good Birding,

Dan Haas
