Found and photographed both in one day! The Painted Bunting was visible on
the feeder at 1035 (for about 7 minutes) and the White-winged Crossbill was
at the feeder at 1435 (for about 5 minutes), at the normal locations. Both
birds were in a heavy feeding mode.
Hi all,
I made my 3rd pilgrimage to see the White-winged Crossbill today and
finally found it. I parked at 1:15 (no one else was there!) and when I set my scope
up aiming at the nyjer feeder at 1:20 the bird was there and feeding
actively, pecking at goldfinches to keep them away. It fed heavily for 10 minutes
and then flew across Sligo Creek Pkwy and into the tops of the tall tulip trees
across the street, where I could not relocate it. About 20 minutes later
Dave Brenneman arrived, and shortly thereafter the bird re-appeared briefly for
him as well. We both left after that.
I paid dearly for this bird. I had to pull off New Hampshire Ave near Ashton
to let an ambulance pass, and ended up with a flat tire, but not until I was
well into Howard County. Took forever to change it too (stupid jack, DOH!).
I was going to try for the Painted Bunting on Saturday but now will be making
a trip to Sears for a new tire instead!
But, what a handsome bird this was. Very bright! Thanks Noah for a great
county bird.
