Paul Noell and I decided to take advantage of the last morning of
warm, pleasant weather today and look for the colorful twosome. We saw
the Painted Bunting in Arnold after about a twenty minute wait. It was
on the feeder in good view from about 10:30 to 10:45. Then we buzzed
on down to Sligo Creek Parkway, which was very easy via Route 50 and
the Capital Beltway. After about ten minutes, we started getting good
looks at the White-winged Crossbill at the feeder from about 11:30 to
12:00. We had super looks at it through Mark England's scope. Thank
you! This all made up for a lot of recent not-see birds, such as
Dovekies, and Sedge Wrens, and Nelson' Sharp-tailed Sparrows.
After such a strenuous morning we were pretty hungry. About two miles
north of the beltway on the right side of Rt 29 we tried the handy
"California Tortilla" restaurant at Burnt Mills center, which had very
tasty food for a reasonable price, and fast. We give it a big thumbs
up. Future questers might want to keep that in mind.
