I live in the northern part of Cecil County, between Fair Hill and
Calvert. My street tees into Middle Road,
and when I left for work yesterday morning around 8:10, just as I
pulled up to the stop sign, a large
bird landed on Middle Road about 20-25 feet from my car. I was pretty
astounded to see the big white head
and realize I was looking at an adult Bald Eagle miles away from any
significant water. It was checking
out a roadkill squirrel, and was accompanied by another adult Bald
Eagle, which was sitting on the fence.
The two birds and I stared at each other for a minute or two, then
the eagles decided to take the squirrel with them.
They flew in a large circle over the cow pasture and then turned back
toward our woods, where I assume
they perched and had breakfast. I would love to have stayed around
for that, but I was late, etc.
What a moment to be without a camera!
Today, as I drove our dog to the vet's office, I saw an adult Bald
Eagle fly into the trees at the intersection
of Dr. Miller Road and Route 273, a couple of miles west of where I
live. I assume it was one of the ones
I saw yesterday. Please cross your fingers that they'll stick around
for tomorrow's midwinter count!
FYI, our snowdrops and witch hazel are blooming.
