Noah - I was one of the lucky birders who viewed the White-winged Crossbill
this morning, arriving around 10:15, and getting a fine sighting of the bird
for several minutes, beginning at 10:22. This was a "life bird" for me, and
today was my first try for it. From my home near Easton on the Eastern Shore
it is a 90 minute drive in the sparse Saturday morning traffic.
Thanks much for keeping those feeders filled, but special thanks
also for letting the birders know of the presence of this great bird.
By the way, while I was there (with a total of 8 or more others that
were coming or going at that time) at least six cars stopped to ask what we
were looking at, and a similar number of hikers, joggers, walkers, or dog
exercisers also stopped to ask. Our group was glad to respond and share our
joy. One of the walkers was there when we had the bird in the scopes, and
she got great views of it - which she really enjoyed.
As I was leaving, I spent nearly half an hour with three of your
neighbors to the north who wanted to know about the bird. I had a field
guide along, so could show them a picture. All were quite interested, very
supportive of our being there to see it, and impressed that you had managed
to attract it.
	Great Job!

I would guess >20 people have seen the White-winged crossbill this morning;
he's being cooperative by feeding on the thistle feeders for 5-10 minutes at
a time. And when he's not there, he's often in the nearby tulip poplars
preening or looking for seeds.

For those that haven't made it here yet, for the last week, he has been
most reliable between 7:15-10am each morning. I'll keep on fillin' the
thistle socks for ya!

"There are some who can live without wild things, and some who cannot...like
winds and sunsets, wild things were taken for granted until progress began
to do away with them. Now we face the question whether a still higher
'standard of living' is worth its cost in things natural, wild, and free.
For us of the minority, the opportunity to see geese is more important than
television, and the chance to find a pasque-flower is a right as inalienable
as free speech."
