Hi all,
I just got back from Arnold,AA County, and viewing the Painted Bunting. I
arrived at about 12:15 and found Jan Brose (Montgomery County) standing watch.
She said she had been there about an hour without seeing the bird. We waited
and watched, watched and waited. Some other birders came and went, being on
tighter schedules than us. About 1 PM or so I saw a bird fly into the bamboo,
and I looked at it through my bins, announcing it to be THE bird (but not
enough of a look to count). It went deeper into the bamboo and disappeared for
about 15-20 minutes or so, then finally Jan saw it on the green feeder. This
was just as Tom Feild and friend were leaving so I shouted to them and they
got on the bird too. Another woman appeared and she also got looks, however
brief. I was able to snap 6 good digi-scope pics of the bird.
A really pretty male, and a lifer for me too! And only my first trip there!
The bird seemed very wary as it fed, and left the feeder only to arrive back
a few moments later. This was its MO while we watched for about an hour or
so, off and on the feeder. Other birds at the feeder were chickadees and a lone
Chipping Sparrow. Rather a quiet feeder mid-day.
