With gracious hospitality (and many thanks) to Andy Brown, I enjoyed observing and photographing the ongoing female Evening Grosbeak at Battle Creek Cypress Sanctuary this morning from about 10:30 am to 11 am, as previously reported.

Eight pictures starting with:

New for my photographed in MD list.

As a point of historical reference, this species had a prominent role in my becoming interested in birding. In the early 1970s, with the help of my father we put out a platform feeder in our backyard in Severna Park. For a couple years, we had a nice flock of EVGRs (always many more females than males) off-and-on throughout the winter. At the beginning, I didn't even had a Peterson or Robbins guide yet, but the little (60 or so species), pocket "golden guide". It had no picture of an Evening Grosbeak, but at the end of the short paragraph and picture of a Rose-breasted Grosbeak there was a one-line description of Evening Grosbeak - which was enough for me to identify the bird!! My mother always referred to them as those chartreuse birds.

Enjoy!
