I'm shocked, I can't believe it, but after nearly a 2 week absence, the White-winged crossbill has returned to my feeders again. Just as he did between his Dec visits and his Jan return, he has changed his behavior. For weeks in December, he only drank water in my yard. Then in January and early February, he restricted himself to thistle and water. Now he has returned in late Feb and expressed a penchant for sunflower seeds; ignoring the thistle.

He returned at 10:40am this morning. Off Sligo Creek Pkwy, <1/4 west of Colesville Road in Silver Spring. At 3 sewer caps on north side of Pkwy, look north up the hill toward my elevated wooden porch with hanging feeders. Good luck,

"There are some who can live without wild things, and some who cannot...like winds and sunsets, wild things were taken for granted until progress began to do away with them. Now we face the question whether a still higher 'standard of living' is worth its cost in things natural, wild, and free. For us of the minority, the opportunity to see geese is more important than television, and the chance to find a pasque-flower is a right as inalienable as free speech."
