On Sunday, Feb 24, 2008, a group from the Audubon Naturalist Society traveled to Point Lookout to enjoy the wintering waterfowl and other birds. The male Harlequin Duck was located in the previously described spot in the company of surf scoters and other diving ducks. Thanks to a tip from Sherm Suter, we ended the day (~5:15pm - 6:15pm) at the Beauvue Ponds, about a mile or two southeast of Leonardtown. In the pond closest to Beauvue Road was a Red-necked Grebe, along with a few Hooded Mergansers, 2 Pied-billed Grebes and a Coot. Other interesting birds in this vicinity included about 150 Ring-necked Ducks, 20 Redheads, 2 Northern Harriers, a Kestrel that went to roost under the eaves of an old outbuilding, and 3 actively feeding Forster's Terns at nearby Abell's Wharf.
